+ Company
Alzhyme is a public unlisted biopharmaceutical company based in Perth, Western Australia committed to the discovery and development of novel drugs for the effective treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The technology arose from research conducted by Professor Ralph Martins and his research teams at The Sir James McCusker Foundation for Alzheimer’s Disease Research at Hollywood Private Hospital and The University of Western Australia. Alzhyme was established through an initial capital investment by it’s founding shareholder and Chairman, Mr. Harold Clough.
Alzheimer’s disease is a debilitating disease affecting an estimated 20 million sufferers and their families worldwide. The prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease is growing rapidly due to the ageing population and is predicted to double by 2025. There are presently no disease modifying drugs available to treat Alzheimer's disease. The current market for treatments that ease the symptoms of the disease is estimated at US$2.5 billion annually.
The technologies being developed by Alzhyme target large markets with unmet medical needs and limited competition. The company's compounds are unique in the way they focus on the neutralisation and eradication of soluble beta-amyloid; a naturally occurring protein critical to the development of the disease. Over fifteen years of research by internationally recognised world leader in Alzheimer’s disease research, Professor Ralph Martins and his team, has led to this highly targeted approach, providing significant advantages over existing drugs and those in development. These continuing efforts are being commercialised by Alzhyme supported by an international scientific advisory board.
Strategy
The company’s strategy is to offer a balanced portfolio of pre-clinical and early stage clinical drug candidates for licensing opportunities to large pharmaceutical companies.
Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating disease that robs a person of their mind and their dignity and places considerable strain and suffering on family members and caregivers. The company’s focus is on the development of early diagnostic testing and disease-modifying drugs that can halt and reverse memory loss in Alzheimer’s disease.
By our dual capability of early diagnosis and the development of disease modifying drugs, Alzhyme’s vision is that one day people will be able to live in a society in which Alzheimer’s disease no longer exists.
